Keeping your employees safe while at work should be one of your top priorities.
The overwhelming majority of companies out there have safety rules and regulations that they routinely reinforce, but every workplace is unique in the safety risks are different in one office compared to another – even if those offices are in the same building.
Use the guidelines below to keep your office a safer workplace without any headache or hassle moving forward.
Come up with a master plan
The most important thing you can do to improve the overall safety and security of your workplace is to come up with a master safety plan, a plan that covers emergency situations and contingencies, and train all of your employees according to this plan on a regular basis.
You’ll also want to make sure that these master plan safety protocols are accessible on a regular basis, and as much as possible you should try and distill these particles down and leave reminders throughout the office to reinforce the lessons.
Make safety equipment effortlessly available
Everyone in your workplace should know exactly where safety equipment and first aid supplies are at all times, but it’s also important to make sure that these tools are effortlessly available. Keep these storage locations free of obstructions, make sure that the locations are clearly and obviously marked and outlined, and reinforce their locations regularly.
Encourage everyone to maintain high situational awareness
It’s really easy to slip into an almost mindless state while you are at the office “going through the motions”. But you want to make sure that you are doing everything you can to reinforce high situational awareness levels with all of your employees. The more present and aware your workforce is, the safer they are.
Conduct regular safety trainings on any tools and equipment
It’s of the utmost importance that all employees – even those that may only use specific tools or equipment sparingly – are trained to safely use and operate any of the tools, technology, or equipment in the office. This kind of training should happen immediately upon hiring but should also be reinforced at regular intervals throughout the year as well.
Encourage breaks
It’s effortless to become overwhelmed, stressed out, worked up, and agitated when you are at work. This is especially true if you’re working in a high-stakes career, or you are dealing with deadlines that are fast approaching. Encourage regular breaks to step away from the work, to calm down, and to settle things down as much as possible and you’ll be able to improve the safety of your workplace significantly.
Reward safe behavior
At the end of the day, it’s important that you reinforce good behavior and safe behavior as much as possible with rewards that encourage your entire workforce to continue this kind of focus on safety.
How you choose to reward this behavior is entirely up to you, but you’ll want to do everything you can to go above and beyond recognizing those that lead a safe workspace and those that do everything they can to keep themselves and their coworkers protected throughout the day.
